“The Futility Of Worrying”

with 2 comments

I have vivid childhood memories of a poster in my parents room which said:-

“What’s the use of worrying”

You are either going to live or die. If you live there is nothing to worry about.

If you die, you will either go to heaven or to hell. If you go to heaven, there is again nothing to worry about.

And if you go to hell, you will be so busy shaking hands with all your friends that you really won’t have the time to worry.

Although, said in a light-hearted and matter of factly manner, the above conveys a rather important underlying message. A fact that we usually tend to ignore in our everyday lives.

It’s said that “You May Have Had A Bad Past But You Would Be Ruining A Perfectly Good Present, By Constantly Worrying About The Future”

You definitely need to think about the future but not worry yourself to death over it. Accept life graciously as it comes.

As a dear friend of mine always tells me, there is only a “dot” (in Sanskrit) that separates “CHINTA” & “CHITA”.

“Knowing ” Can Be Quite A Challenge!

with one comment

We all know the adage that “Ignorance is Bliss”. That is what makes childhood such a beautiful experience. A child’s mind is ignorant of most of what adults tend to worry about.

Knowing & learning is a part of the journey as one grows and moves on in life and is a natural metamorphosis. We all learn.

“Knowing” can become quite a challenge when despite being aware of the impact of an action, you still go ahead and do that very thing. A close friend of mine is a cancer specialist and a chain smoker too. Isn’t it ironical that he isn’t able to quit this habit despite knowing exactly what that smoke & nicotine are going to do to his body?  In fact, he counsels many a patient each day on the contrary. But does his inability to quit smoking in any way dilute the fact that he knows exactly why he must not smoke?

Similar is the understanding of Life that one acquires over a period of time. I find a lot of people saying “it’s easier said than done” – “practice what you preach”.

The next time you find a person behaving contrary to what he is “preaching” , try not to discount the essence of what he is trying to put across. He probably knows exactly what the “smoke” is going to him and perhaps feels much more challenged than a person who doesn’t!

“The Art Of Flexibility”

with one comment

A lot of us are not flexible only because we feel it conveys a sense of weakness and lack of conviction to put one’s point across. In the bargain the fine line gets overlooked. Being flexible will more often than not create a “Win – Win ” situation, generate respect for yourself and give you the ability to adapt yourself to a required situation. It will give you that “valuable time” to invest elsewhere, that you would have otherwise spent on sticking to your point.

A lot of people feel otherwise too. “You need to stick to your point of view also”, they argue. How else would you avoid “people takeing you for granted”. True, maybe, in certain circumstances.

But have you ever wondered that inflexibility is also a trait which will make you equally unacceptable.

Lyrics of a popular Kenny Rogers number:-

“Everyone considered him the coward of the county.
He never stood one single time to prove the county wrong.
His mama named him Tommy, the folks just called him yellow,
Something always told me they were reading Tommy wrong.

He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison.
I looked after Tommy ’cause he was my brothers son.
I still recall the final words my brother said to Tommy:

“Son, my life is over, but yours is just begun.

Promise me, son, not to do the things I’ve done.
Walk away from trouble if you can.
It won’t mean you’re weak if you turn the other cheek.
I hope you’re old enough to understand:

Son, you don’t have to fight to be a man!”

Respect That “Moment Of Glory”

with one comment

Imagine yourself enjoying a sumptuous meal when all of a sudden you bite into a stone or something alike. Doesn’t it just ruin the entire experience. You just snap out of that wonderful state of mind into an irritable , distasteful one.

Each person has his own “moment of glory” and it becomes the responsibility of people around to ensure that this “moment” is experienced by him / her in its unadulterated form. Even if you notice something “amiss”, save it for a later moment. The observation isn’t perishable but the moment surely is short lived.

Let the feeling sink in. Respect everybody’s “MOMENT OF GLORY”.

“Are You Driving Right?”

leave a comment »

There are days that you are driving on the highway that you start feeling that every other driver around you is driving wrongly. “What’s wrong with these guys today?”, one tends to ask angrily. Whenever this happens , maybe its time to pause a while and look at the way you yourself, are driving.

It’s very easy in life to slip into the “victim mode” & start believing that you are the only “wronged” person around. Step back and take a second look at things around you. If you are suddenly feeling that everyone around you is “wrong”, it’s probably time for some introspection to ascertain whether you yourself are on the right track? “Rights” & “Wrongs” in life are relative and the perception can change entirely if the outlook is changed.

The next time you feel this way, pause a while and look again, maybe the real reason that you are looking for on the outside actually lies within.

“The Crucial Balance Between Knowledge & Humility”

with one comment

There is no dearth of knowledgeable people out there in this world. But how often do you come accross people who are knowledgeable & possess the humility that should go with such a stature?

Knowledge with Humility commands respect. Knowledge with lack of humility tends to demand respect. If you are able to attain that “crucial balance” between the two, the respect for the humility that you carry your knowledge around with will multiply the respect you command, in manifold terms.

It’s upto you to maintain that crucial balance between “Knowledge & Humility”.

“The Corporate Fairyland”

with 5 comments

Notice a mother talking to her 3 year toddler and the first thing that will strike you is the manner in which she takes her child through a “Fairyland” that they have created together. There are no boundaries. Nor is any worldly logic applied. Its not the “real world”, as we call it but she still creates what makes her child happy.  In the bargain, she lets the child grow up & develop without the worldly constraints that the child’s mind is not even remotely developed enough to comprehend. Once he / she grows up, he / she will automatically grow out of this “Fairyland” and step in the “real world”. Why should one be in a hurry to make this happen?

I had written the other day about “The Right Environment to Germinate”. A great analogy can be drawn from the above to the “Corporate World” around us. It becomes the duty of a manager to attain the role similar to that of the mother during the “first steps” of a “baby in the organisation”. He / she must create a “Corporate Fairyland” till such time the person settles down and is in a position to decipher the maze, that at times baffles even the veteran “war horse”. Its important to ensure that a person who has just set foot in this “corporate world” is able to “get his feet in” and grow in a conducive environment.

If you want people to grow & be themselves you need to create “The Corporate Fairyland”.

“The Right Environment To Germinate”

leave a comment »

Even the best of seeds would not germinate if they did not get the right kind of environment to germinate in. So while you might a great set of people around you, the talent would never surface if you are not able to provide the right environment for them to “germinate” in.

It , therefore becomes the responsibility of a true leader to provide an environment that would be conducive to nurture such talent. Just like the “first steps” of a child takes time to come by, the “first steps” of a newcomer in the “real world” would take its own time to come by. In that initial journey , he needs support, guidance and that “shoulder ” that he can lean on. After all, the person who is expected to be a solid professional is at first a “human being”. That is a basic fact that cannot be overlooked.

“To Have the Right Environment For A seed To Germinate  Is As Important As Having The Right Seed Itself”
